Fricative
‘F IC IVE’ is an artist book which contains a short text. This text uses exaptation as a lens to view the potential colonial languages contained within dry transfer sheets. ‘F IC IVE’ is presented in conversation in a gallery space with another more abstract artist book titled ‘F C V ‘. Both book titles ‘F IC IVE’ and ‘F C V ‘ (the word ‘FRICATIVE’ with various letters removed through dry transfer rubbing) reference the act of using a dry transfer sheet to form words as Fricative is described as “a consonant characterized by frictional passage of the expired breath through a narrowing at some point in the vocal tract” (Merriam Webster).
‘F IC IVE’ and ‘F C V ‘ were produced as part of my artist book solo exhibition ['I (or we) CONJURE] curated by Dr Désirée Coral at INN, Balmerino, Fife in May 2026. All exhibition photographs taken by Robin de Vries.
